California Driver's License FAQ
You can begin California driver's education at 15. You may apply for a learner's permit at 15½ once driver's education is complete, and you can be licensed at 16 after holding the permit for six months and completing the required practice.
A provisional instruction permit lets you practice driving before you are licensed. While holding it you must always be accompanied by a licensed driver 25 or older who sits in the front passenger seat, and you may not drive alone.
Drivers under 18 must complete six hours of professional behind-the-wheel training with a licensed instructor. That is our Six-Hour Lesson Package — three two-hour appointments. Adults are not required to take lessons, though most benefit from them.
California requires 50 hours of supervised practice for drivers under 18, and 10 of those hours must be at night. Practice is supervised by a licensed driver 25 or older, and you record the hours to certify them at the DMV.
Complete driver's education, then make a DMV appointment. Bring your completion certificate, proof of identity and residency, and a parent or guardian signature if you are under 18. You will pass a vision check and the written knowledge test, then receive your permit.
Bring your valid learner's permit — we cannot begin a behind-the-wheel lesson without it — along with any glasses or contacts you need to drive, and comfortable closed-toe shoes.
Yes. Our DMV Drive Test Car Rental provides an insured, dual-control vehicle for your test appointment, including a warm-up drive beforehand so you arrive relaxed and familiar with the car.
An examiner first checks the vehicle's safety equipment and asks you to demonstrate the controls. You then drive roughly 20 minutes on local streets while the examiner evaluates lane changes, turns, intersections, speed control and observation.
Adults 18 and over are not required to complete driver's education or professional training. Many still book lessons to prepare for the drive test, build confidence on freeways, or return to driving after time away.
